BUYING GUIDE

Sizing a server or network rack

Rack-unit height is only one part of equipment fit. A useful server or network rack brief includes mounting depth, support interfaces, connections, heat and the route used for servicing.

Build an equipment list

Record each device’s mounting requirements, depth, weight and connection locations from its documentation. Include shelves and accessories needed for equipment that does not mount directly. Distinguish usable mounting depth from the outside cabinet dimension. Planned expansion should be described as actual equipment needs rather than an arbitrary allowance that hides an underspecified fit.

Compare access and enclosure

An open frame can offer access where the room already controls entry; an enclosure adds its own boundary but needs airflow and cable planning. Wall-mounted devices require suitable wall and mounting assessment. Swing-out and slide-out frames need movement space and compatible cable routing. No enclosure label establishes cooling or environmental performance by itself.

Review the full room interface

Include front and rear service space, door swing, delivery route and electrical or cooling requirements for review by the responsible specialists. Confirm mounting rails, shelves and accessories as a system. Battery equipment can impose additional requirements and needs its own qualified assessment. Do not infer compatibility simply because two items share a nominal rack width.

Planning question

Is outside cabinet depth the usable mounting depth?+

Not necessarily. Check the specified mounting range and allowance for connections, doors and airflow for the actual equipment.
