Define the storage task
For a distribution operation, map reserve pallets, replenishment traffic and outbound staging as distinct activities. Goods waiting for a carrier may need floor staging rather than permanent rack positions. Record the busiest overlap between incoming and outgoing loads and which stock lines require individual access. Include empty pallets and packaging returns so those movements are not omitted from the layout discussion.
Compare the right starting points
Compare selective pallet racking with deeper grouped lanes only after the stock profile and retrieval order are understood. More positions are not useful if replenishment blocks dispatch. Identify the handling equipment and collect floor and building information for assessment. For a phased change, describe which operations must continue while the proposed storage area is being prepared.
A useful brief for this project
- Reserve stock and dispatch staging separately
- Peak movement overlap
- Operating constraints during a change
Planning question
Should every pallet waiting for dispatch be racked?+
Not necessarily. Dwell time and handling sequence matter. Describe the staging task separately so storage positions are not confused with a dispatch buffer.
