RACK & STORAGE SOLUTIONS FOR CANADIAN SPACES
BUYING GUIDE

Cantilever versus pallet racking

The first distinction is the load itself: long loose stock and palletized goods usually need different support and retrieval arrangements. Neither family is a universal substitute for the other.

Separate the stored shapes

Cantilever arrangements use projecting supports for long materials; pallet arrangements support unit loads in defined positions. A bundle of profiles, a sheet panel and a pallet of cartons are not equivalent loads. Record dimensions, weight distribution and how the goods are protected. Do not choose by the longest item alone.

Follow the retrieval movement

Describe whether one piece, a bundle or a complete pallet is removed. Include the equipment that approaches the rack and the staging space needed after retrieval. A rack that holds an item still may not allow the intended handling movement. Panels can require a separate sheet-storage arrangement rather than a general long-stock layout.

Keep engineering out of guesswork

Ask for the support spacing, restraints and structural suitability to be assessed for the actual materials and site. This guide does not provide load calculations or anchoring instructions. Existing components need identification and documentation before extension. Send a clear inventory and layout so the assessor is reviewing real loads rather than a broad label such as metal stock.

Planning question

Can loose lengths go onto a pallet rack?+

Only a configuration assessed for those goods and supports can establish suitability. The presence of beams does not make a pallet rack an approved long-materials system.
