Hamilton rack and storage planning

Hamilton’s economic development material identifies advanced manufacturing as a local strength. Work-in-progress storage and maintenance spares are useful starting points for a rack enquiry because they follow different retrieval cycles.

Local context: Hamilton industry context. The planning questions below apply this context to a possible purchasing task.

Define the storage task

For a production workshop, map the parts arriving at each station and the partly completed items leaving it. A shelf used between two operations may need frequent access from a different direction than a maintenance store. Record container sizes and return paths. Include equipment that is temporarily parked during changeovers so those areas are not mistakenly counted as available rack space.

Compare the right starting points

Parts bins can define small-component picking positions, while longspan shelves may suit larger hand-loaded containers. Neither should be specified before the actual item weights and handling method are known. Separate maintenance items that require occasional retrieval from production items needed every shift. For an existing installation, collect drawings and identification instead of assuming new components can be mixed into it.

A useful brief for this project

  • Containers at each production step
  • Changeover staging and return paths
  • Existing rack identification and records

Planning question

Can an existing bay simply accept new shelves?+

Compatibility needs confirmation for the identified system and configuration. Photos help with discussion but do not substitute for manufacturer information or a suitability assessment.
