Cambridge: separating fabrication stock from completed assemblies

Cambridge identifies advanced manufacturing as a local sector. Fabrication storage needs to distinguish long raw materials from assemblies that change shape as work progresses.

Local context: Cambridge local context. The planning questions below apply this context to a possible purchasing task.

Plan the actual workflow

List bar, tube and sheet stock by length and handling method. Track offcuts separately: they may need more identification and different retrieval than full-length material. Describe where material is measured and released to production. A rack arrangement that supports the longest item is not automatically convenient for short reusable offcuts.

Compare the storage arrangement

Compare cantilever supports for long loads with shelf or pallet arrangements for finished assemblies. Include packaging and temporary supports used between operations. Ask for the proposed support spacing and load arrangement to be evaluated for the actual materials; this page supplies no structural design or capacity.

A useful brief for this project

  • Full lengths and reusable offcuts
  • Handling and cutting handoff
  • Assembly supports and packaging

Planning question

Should offcuts share the same positions as full lengths?+

Compare support, identification and retrieval first. Mixed lengths can change the support and access task.
